With Joanna’s mentorship and support, Women’s Adventure Network embarked on an unforgettable backcountry camping trip to Ribbon Falls Backcountry Campground in Kananaskis Country. For all the participants, this was our first time backcountry camping, and the experience left us eager to venture out on our own.
Day 1: Gear Check and Unloading
Our adventure began with a gear check at the Ribbon Creek parking lot. Since this was the first time backcountry camping, for most of us – our packs were heavier than ideal.
Joanna guided us through what was essential and helped us distribute the load more efficiently among the group. We left behind: a book, coconut water, extra butane, cookware, and several litres of water.
The Journey Begins

We set out on an 11 km hike to Ribbon Falls Backcountry Campground, following the gushing Ribbon Creek through mostly forested paths with a gradual incline. The trail offered invigorating views that distracted us from the crux – our backpacks.

By the third quarter of the way, I was really feeling the load. Everyone was wondering how much longer we had left. Until thank goodness before we started running on fumes – we finally reached Ribbon Falls Backcountry Campground. Okay, I’m being dramatic, but some of us were carrying a 40 lbs pack.

Upon reaching the campground, Joanna looked at the sites and selected the best ones for us – those closest to Ribbon Falls (campground 8 – you’re welcome!).
We set up our tents and gathered at the communal dining area for a well-deserved supper. We then went to tackle Ribbon Lake after our meal. After about 10 minutes into the hike, the crew huddled and decided that we didn’t want to take the risk of running against sundown. It was already around 6:30 PM at the time.
We headed back to our tents to change into our cozies, gathered around the fire and under the evening sky, and played a few lighthearted games that brought out laughter and friendly competition. I would bet all my camping gears that everyone felt good about our decision.

Day 2: Finding Rungs and Hidden Gems
The second day began with a breakfast and Joanna showing us a few tips for choosing a filtration system and preparing lightweight meals and snacks. We then ventured off from the campground to the 2 km hike to Ribbon Lake. The hike unexpectedly turned out to be a lot of fun with spectacular views of the surrounding peaks.

The trail led us to the Ribbon Headwall, where the adventure truly kicked into gear. We were met with a steep ascent, but the rungs helped us navigate the climb for everyone – including the participants scrambling for the first time!

The via-Ferrata features made this a fantastic trip. I think it will take a long while for us to forget about this hike!

We soon reached Ribbon Lake, briefly walked around the perimeter, and admired the wildflowers. We decided to head back down to a beautiful spot to take a break.
One of the highlights of the day was discovering this waterfalls near Ribbon Lake. The falls were in a tranquil, secluded spot where we took some time to relax, dip our feet in the cool water, and enjoy the refreshing mist.

After savoring the beauty of the lake and the waterfall, we started our way back to Ribbon Falls campground.

Descending the Ribbon Headwall
Before packing up, Joanna shared her tips for lightweight gear, showing us her sleeping bag, mat, and 4-person tent.
By 1:30 PM, we were off to the 10 km trek back to the parking lot. The hike back was challenging after such an eventful day, but the sense of accomplishment we felt carried us through. We were back at the parking lot around 4 PM.
Reflections on an Unforgettable Weekend
Our trip to Ribbon Falls Campground was more than just a hike; it was an opportunity to connect with nature and learn valuable backcountry skills. It became challenging towards the end, but the campground was a perfect learning ground for us first-timers. The sites were next to each other, the water source was about 15 metres away from the dining area, and it offers an easy hike with splendid views for those who want to explore around.
The weekend left us feeling inspired to plan our own trip to backcountry with our family and friends. We returned home with tired legs but full hearts, already looking forward to our next adventure.
