Rock Rescue with Sarah Heuniken

In partnership with Sarah Heuniken and @baneenclimbs, Women’s Adventure Network is offering a fully funded two-day Rock Rescue course for five WAN volunteers and one BIPOC woman. The course is designed to build the technical skills and confidence needed to respond to real-life climbing scenarios. It is ideal for climbers who already have experience leading sport climbs and are ready to grow into more self-sufficient, competent partners

Why Take Rock Rescue?

Climbing outside comes with inherent risks. While we don’t expect things to go wrong, being prepared makes all the difference. Rock Rescue helps us become a more capable and reliable climbing partner.

This course focuses on:

  • Building skills for responding in emergency scenarios
  • Efficient problem-solving under pressure
  • Strong communication and partner awareness
  • Technical systems that support safe outcomes

Who Is Eligible?

We are offering one spot to a BIPOC female climber, who:

  • Has experience leading sport climbs and comfortable managing anchor systems
  • Can attend both training days in the Bow Valley area
  • Wants to build independence and competence in leading climbing activities
  • Lives in Calgary and Bow Valley area
  • Aligns with WAN’s values of community learning and peer leadership
  • Can commit to hosting one activity for WAN within three months of course completion
  • Follows WAN’s Instagram page

A Give-Back Commitment

Because this opportunity is fully funded and rooted in community, participants are expected to pay it forward by contributing a give-back activity that supports and uplifts other women in Women’s Adventure Network.

We ask participants to:

  • Host (or co-host with a WAN volunteer) one activity for WAN within three months of completing the course
  • Activities can be beginner-friendly and low-risk, such as: a day at a crag or an indoor climbing session

You won’t be expected to teach rock rescue skills. WAN will support you in planning an activity that fits your comfort level.
